When Cats Have Allergies
If your cat scratches herself a lot, tearing out fur and even skin, and other possible causes have been ruled out by your vet, consider environmental or food allergies as the possible culprit. Any cat scratching repeatedly, especially to the point of self injury, can be checked for a variety of possible causes by your veterinarian. Your vet will discuss your cat?s environment, habits, food and examine the scratched area(s) to help determine the ultimate cause.

How (NOT) To Poison Your Cat
Just as we had to childproof our home before our sons began to crawl, so we have had to catproof the parts of our home that our cats live in. Just use common sense. If you would not drink or eat something, be sure your cat can't either.
Of course, just as you would not give beer to a human baby, do not offer it to your cat, either (not that they'd take it anyway, since cats generally turn up their noses and run at the smell of alcohol).
All our cabinets with cleaning fluids and powders are locked or out of reach. If a cleaning agent can hurt a child, it can probably hurt a cat, too. The door to our garage is weighted so it cannot stay open by accident. Cats find spilled antifreeze attractive to drink. And drinking it will kill a cat.

Caring For Your Older Cat
As cats age, their physical needs and capabilities gradually change. There are many new products available to help keep your feline friend's life comfortable and happy. This article does not take the place of talking to your veterinarian about health factors affecting aging cats or medical treatment for your cat. We include this article because we believe in supporting the continuing education of people who care about their feline friends, and we wish to increase your awareness of the types of products and help available. We have looked through many large pet supply stores, cat care catalogs, and web sites to find the product information and the average prices ($US) mentioned here.

Keeping Your Cat Cool in Hot Weather
Our pet fountain reservoir must be refilled daily due to evaporation (and cats drinking!).
Our outdoor cat water dish is huge, but it still needs to be re-filled daily and cleaned often.
Charger, our Bengal male, like to have his fur dampened once or twice a day in warm weather. He leads me into the bathroom while talking and jumps up to the sink. I dampen my hands and run them along his back and sides (not neck or belly). This also removes loose fur.
He also likes to drink from a drizzling faucet, even though he has a pet fountain and water dish in different rooms. Our cats have many places they can lie down, depending on their mood or the temperature. Ideally cat resting areas should be free of draft, or sheltered from air conditioning vents, and not in direct sunlight. Some cats prefer secluded spots, where they can see everyone, but not everyone sees them immediately. In hot weather, cool wooden or laminate floors may be preferred by some cats over carpet, cat or human beds.
